Let's Talk Hair - Part 2 - Hair Tools & Accessories

image3.jpg

In Let's Talk Hair-Part 1 learning exactly what makes your hair unique and understanding what you may need to consider for understanding good hair care is discussed.  Now that we are clear about are unique hair characteristics, let's talk about hair tools.  The hair tools that we use can greatly affect the health of our hair.  Some cause unneeded friction, snagging, tearing, and other unnecessary hair damage.

No matter what your hair type using the best hair tools can improve your overall hair health.  When I changed my hair tools to damage free accessories and tools, my hair truly began to thrive.  Before I share my favorite hair tools here's a few hair tools to avoid using in your hair.

  • Broken tip bobby pins

  • Metal closure hair elastics

  • Seamed hair combs

  • Brushes with ball tips on the ends

  • Hair claws with metal hinges

  • Cotton hair accessories

  • Metal hair accessories in general

These items listed above can be extremely damaging to hair.  Cotton hair accessories have the ability to dry out hair while also creating excess friction on hair strands.  Hair tools with broken tips, metal closures, and metal hinges snag hair and cause breakage.  Combs with seams along the teeth also have the ability to snap and tear hair, especially curly hair.  Brushes with ball tips on the ends can snag hair and are never as gentle as seamless combs.

My Absolute Favorite Hair Tools

Wooden Hair Forks

One of my favorite hair forks was purchased from Sweet Skins.  This simple two prong wooden hair fork from Bali holds any updo without any other tools needed.  By using hair tools like this your hair doesn't undergo the usual stress of hair elastics and hair pins.

Leather Hair Barrettes

The beauty of the leather hair barrettes from Old School Leather are unmatched.  All of these barrettes are handmade .

These hold hair styles with ease.  I've been wearing these barrettes for a long time and the quality and price is unbelievable.

Goody Simple Style Spin Pins

These innovative hair pins replace the need for a ton of bobby pins or hair pins.  One or two Goody Spin Pins can really hold any hair style depending on hair thickness.   I can easily create a chic french twist with a banana clip and four small goody spin pins.  The amount of hair styles that can be created with this simple hair tool is unlimited.

Goody Comfort-Flex Updo Barrettes

Goody did it again by creating another genius hair tool when these barrettes where designed.  The Goody Ouchless Flex Barrette works well as a ponytail holder, to pin up hair, and completely replaces hair claws and clips for me.  They’re great for styling the hair to keep sections separate as well as for the actual hair style.

Seamless Combs

When I changed to using a seamless comb my hair really began retaining more length.  There are many types of seamless combs. I found this comb at The Body Shop.  It’s very reasonably priced.

Satin Hair Scrunchies

Satin scrunchies are more gentle on hair than even the ouchless hair elastics.  If you plan to use ponytail holders these are the best for hair health.  They won't dry out or snag hair.

In Let's Talk Hair-Part 3 hair product ingredients will be the main focus.  Hair regimens and DIY hair products by hair type will be discussed in Let's Talk Hair-Part 4.  There are many factors to consider when creating a healthy hair care routine, and the hair tools that you use has so much to do with it.  Notice that I didn't discuss blow dryers, curling irons, or flat irons in this article.

I believe that air drying hair is the healthiest method for drying hair.  Hair air drying methods will also be discussed in Part 4.

Enjoy!
