Let's Talk Hair - Part 2 - Hair Tools & Accessories

In Let's Talk Hair-Part 1 learning exactly what makes your hair unique and understanding what you may need to consider for understanding good hair care is discussed.  Now that we are clear about are unique hair characteristics, let's talk about hair tools.  The hair tools that we use can greatly affect the health of our hair.  Some cause unneeded friction, snagging, tearing, and other unnecessary hair damage.

No matter what your hair type using the best hair tools can improve your overall hair health.  When I changed my hair tools to damage free accessories and tools, my hair truly began to thrive.  Before I share my favorite hair tools here's a few hair tools to avoid using in your hair.

  • Broken tip bobby pins

  • Metal closure hair elastics

  • Seamed hair combs

  • Brushes with ball tips on the ends

  • Hair claws with metal hinges

  • Cotton hair accessories

  • Metal hair accessories in general

These items listed above can be extremely damaging to hair.  Cotton hair accessories have the ability to dry out hair while also creating excess friction on hair strands.  Hair tools with broken tips, metal closures, and metal hinges snag hair and cause breakage.  Combs with seams along the teeth also have the ability to snap and tear hair, especially curly hair.  Brushes with ball tips on the ends can snag hair and are never as gentle as seamless combs.

In Let's Talk Hair-Part 3 hair product ingredients will be the main focus.  Hair regimens and DIY hair products by hair type will be discussed in Let's Talk Hair-Part 4.  There are many factors to consider when creating a healthy hair care routine, and the hair tools that you use has so much to do with it.  Notice that I didn't discuss blow dryers, curling irons, or flat irons in this article.

I believe that air drying hair is the healthiest method for drying hair.  Hair air drying methods will also be discussed in Part 4.

Enjoy!
